I joined this bus halfway on it’s journey. There was this old man with a talking drum strapped on his shoulder who wanted to alight at a stop not far from where I got on the bus. From my understanding of the situation, the man was supposed to pay 50 naira but in the man’s opinion, he was supposed to pay just 30 naira and so he argued with the driver who said, ‘Ehn e bole’ (translated as ‘Get off the bus’). You know how these bus drivers are about their fares.
The old man, trying to play smart, was waiting to alight when the bus got to his stop (since the driver told him to get down if he couldn’t pay the 50 naira).
When we got to his stop, the old man tried to get down but trust the smart bus conductor, he blocked the man’s way and the bus continued moving. This man started shouting at the driver that he wanted to come down. The bus kept moving and dropping other people and each time the bus stopped, the man also tried to get down, without paying, I must add. It got to a point where we were pretty far from his stop, like it wasn’t a trek-able distance at all and then he started begging the driver to let him get off. In the end, the man got off without paying (He pushed the bus conductor when he was distracted).
What baffled me was that the man had the said 50 naira at hand. Did I mention this man also tried to snatch money from the bus conductor’s hand?
This roused A lot of questions and issues within me. Why didn’t he just give the driver the fifty naira? Then i thought, It was probably his last card and he didn’t want to part with it but must that be at someone else’s expense? Why did this man leave his house or wherever he was coming from if he didn’t have enough transport fare? Was this man just being plain greedy? Do you think the driver was being mean?
Brought to you by Unsettled Adnan. In other news, there will be a weekly post from me on this blog titled Memoirs of Unsettled Adnan. I would be writing on many issues and also sharing my life experiences and hope that a few people will learn from my story and I also hope it is a source of inspiration to one or two people :D. I may also include conversations I have had with people. Let me just drop one here.
One day, I told Tolu Oludapo that he owes me an outing and then he asked me where I wanted us to go and I said ‘Coldstone Ice-cream’. All Tolu could say was ‘Why don’t I get a stone and put it in my freezer *pensive* ‘ I’m sorry Tolu :p I’m a writer. Anything you say or do will be used in a story.
