FROM GEORGE ATKINS TO YOU

Exhausted senior man with hands on faceThe words of George Atkins in a hymn titled “Brethren, We have met to worship” have remained in my heart since it was rendered in my church this morning.
Here are my three favourite verses;

Brethren, see poor sinners round you
Slumb’ring on the brink of woe;
Death is coming, hell is moving,
Can you bear to let them go?
See our fathers and our mothers,
And our children sinking down;
Brethren, pray and holy manna
Will be showered all around

Sisters, will you join and help us?
Moses’ sister aided him;
Will you help the trembling mourners
Who is struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior,
Tell them that He will be found;
Sisters, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.

Let us love our God supremely,
Let us love each other, too;
Let us love and pray for sinners,
Till our God makes all things new.
Then He’ll call us home to heaven,
At His table we’ll sit down;
Christ will gird Himself, and serve us
With sweet manna all around.

Does your heart weep for the sinners around you? If they don’t meet Christ, they are doomed to destruction! If your heart doesn’t cry for them, you should be termed as heartless and wicked. Like the line from the hymn, “can you bear to let them go?! So pray for them, and share the good news that Christ, suffered than died that they might escape the impending doom of hell, to live life everlasting in glory with God in heaven.

I hope this post is able to serve that one purpose, which is to echo the first 4 lines of that hymn;

Brethren, see poor sinners round you
Slumb’ring on the brink of woe;
Death is coming, hell is moving,
Can you bear to let them go?

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.” Matt 9:38-39
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” Rom 10:13-15
And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Mark 16:15.
