The Boy Who Screamed

One day the guild of prophets came to Elisha and said, “You can see that this place where we’re living under your leadership is getting cramped—we have no elbow room. Give us permission to go down to the Jordan where each of us will get a log. We’ll build a roomier place.”

Elisha said, “Go ahead.”
One of them then said, “Please! Come along with us!”
He said, “Certainly.”
He went with them. They came to the Jordan and started chopping down trees. As one of them was felling a timber, his axhead flew off and sank in the river.
“Oh no, master!” he cried out. “And it was borrowed!”
The Holy Man said, “Where did it sink?”
The man showed him the place. He cut off a branch and tossed it at the spot. The axhead floated up.
“Grab it,” he said. The man reached out and took it.

If you’ve ever borrowed anything, you know how a colleague’s notebook can become more important than your favourite dress when it comes to safeguarding. It’s simple: Whatever was borrowed must be returned in one piece, either to maintain your reputation or to secure your borrowing source so that there will be a next time.

Keeping that in mind, it’s easy to see how much God cares in this story. Some people think God is sitting up there waiting to laugh at their next mistake when in actual sense, He’s looking for ways to improve our lives even if that translates to working miracles just for the sake of saving our faces and watching our backs.

Another takeaway is where the guy screamed for help.

Most of us would have kept quiet for fear of being ridiculed or picked on by the other men. Nobody wants to be that person who creates problems, slows down work and the guy could have said ‘I don’t want to be a bother to the Prophet’ but guess what, he cried for help.

You may have bought all the Miss-Independent, self-sufficient, fire-talking, needing-nobody persona that has sold fast in our day, but remember that sometimes real strength is in acknowledging where we need help, exchanging our weakness for God’s strength. When you get to that point, don’t stand there pretending to be fixing something, don’t be shy, don’t be ashamed to SCREAM!!

Feel free to post as a comment whatever lesson you picked from the story. But remember, God cares about everything, even the tiniest of things, and there is nothing wrong with screaming out for help.
