Chess is a two-player board game played on a chess board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each of the six piece types moves differently, with the most powerful being the queen and the least powerful the pawn.
The goal is to place the opponent players under attacks that they end up surrendering: Checkmate.
I am no guru in this field, but do you know that there life lessons to learn from the game? Below are 10 Life Lessons from Chess;
- Look before leaping: A wrong move can lead you into being held captive. Consider the whole board when planning a move. The game teaches that you look and think carefully, weighing possible outcomes before taking a defining step.
- Foresight: Slightly different from the first is having foresight. In other to beat your opponent you would need to think out of the box. And this requires a careful study of the present to know the future. Have a plan A, B and C. Foresight helps us prepare for rainy days and avert imminent dangers ahead.
- Sacrifice: Often times, we would need to sacrifice something to get another which would be beneficial at the long run. The pawn is been sacrificed to secure a vantage point. No one ever made it forward in life without having sacrificed at one point or the other.
- Interdependence: We all need each other to survive. This is clearly displayed as each player depends on themselves. The king and queen depend on their knights and pawns. In the same vein, those we think of as seemingly unimportant are actually our stepping stones to success.
- Purpose: A purposeless life is headed for doom. Every move is strategized for a purpose. Life is too strategic to not have calculating and purposeful moves.
- Learn from your mistakes: Mistakes are part of life. A wrong move could mean losing the game. But that doesn’t suggest that we would lose all the time. If we lose, do so graciously and learn at least one important lesson
- Creativity: The game of chess teaches creativity in a subtle way. Always following the same pattern, could make your opponent suggest your next move hence diversify. So also, we all should learn to bring up new ideas and try out new things. Cease to be stereotyped.
- Accumulate small advantage. We should not wait for so big an advantage before we act. Just a little opening could be all that we need to make a statement. Seize the initiative before someone else does and obviously, we won’t like the outcome.
- Don’t get carried away: Do not get carried away by temporal success, titles and praises. Remember the bible says “let he that stands, take heed lest he falls”. Keep this in mind.
- “Strategy without patience can be causatic. Patience without strategy can become anemic. Having both strategy and patience is a rare gift.”— Brannon Marshall
