Couple embracing at sunset

Every relationship is unique one to the other; each has its unique merits and demerits. However, some relationships have peculiar characteristics for which people try to avoid them as much as possible. Some other persons on the other hand desire such relationship. These kinds of relationship include “Long Distance Relationship” and “Dating a Public figure”.

Today we’ll focus on “Dating a public figure”, while we’ll examine Long Distance Relationship next week.

I sought people’s opinion on dating-a-public-figure on the blog’s BBM channel, C0043C2A1. Here are a couple of responses, the first two from ladies dating a public figure.

1. Miss A: Hmm, There’s this girl who stares hard at me every Sunday, Like I’m a threat to her, Even my boo noticed. That’s a fear.

Disadvantages: He barely has time for me except I force him to create time or I knock sense into his head.

I have to be strong cos there’ll always be critics and I won’t be left out.

Also puts me in the public eye. How I dress, how I talk etc. Plus I have to shine teeth every time whether I’m in the mood or not.

And I have to be careful who I ‘snob’

And I have to be careful not to embarrass the family. So it’s just like u have to impress everyone or they’ll tear u down or put pressure on him to ‘do better’

Advantages: You get to meet people who matter; Celebs alike and also, it makes u feel special. Like a celebrity too

2. Miss Demi: Hmmmm! It can really be annoying! Lol .. I’m dating a public figure! It’s not easy oooo. Many times I want all of his attention and time, but he has to just share me with the world! Lol!

But I get to meet amazing and great people, I get to share some of my ideas and I’ve been welcomed to a good network. Asides that, I’ve learnt and still learning to share, to be selfless, to be understanding and to be patient.

3. Dr Temmy: Yes, I can date a public figure. It takes a lot of work though and understanding on both sides. Communication is also very key.

4. Miss Peace: Well I can date a public figure…most certainly not a pastor. Too much responsibility: D

SOME WORDS OF ADVICE

  • GET REAL ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Don’t expect from your relationship what isn’t realistic due to its nature. For instance, don’t expect to always have your partner with you every time or always have his attention when you need him. You might have to be more responsible for the home and the kids.

Don’t compare your relationship or partner to your friend’s own; no two relationships are ever the same.

  • YOU’LL NEED TO EXERCISE PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING AND SACRIFICE

Every relationship needs patience and understanding to work. For this kind of relationship, you will need more “buff” than normal relationships. You will have to learn how to live with having him absent at home, sleeping alone most times, cooking for unexpected guests and so on. You must learn how to sacrifice, because you’ll have to do a lot of that if the relationship is going to work.

  • SPEAK OUT WHEN DISSATISFIED

Communication like every relationship will be a tool you have to hold dearly to heart. Most public figures have the tendency of having a lot of things slip off their fingers. They could forget major date, forget to pick up groceries on their way home, and might not even notice when the relationship is slipping off the edge.

You’ll have to speak out every time, let them know what you want them to be more mindful of, what you expect from them. You have to be the Quality Control Officer, always put things in check. The truth is that the success of the relationship is in your court.

  • BE SUPPORTIVE

I can’t over emphasise this enough, trust me you don’t want to be the partner that has nothing to do with their partner’s business. Even if you hate comedies and he’s a comedian, you still have learn how buy front roll ticket, and fake a laugh.

There is nothing as important to a man/woman than that they have the support of their partner. Let me repeat, you might not like what he does, but for the love and relationship sake, pick interest, ask him/her how the “business” is doing, make contributions when you can. In summary, BE HIS/HER NUMBER 1 FAN.

When getting discouraged, look at/think about the things that truly matter, and most especially, the reason(s) you started the relationship in the first place.

In a situation where the two of you are public figures, well, I guess that balances out.

CAN YOU DATE/MARRY A PUBLIC FIGURE? (Pastor, musician, comedian, speaker, politician, movie actor, sport athlete…name it). Which one(s) can you date? Which one can you not date? And Why? Or are you dating/married to one at the moment? Tell us about it. Merits & de-merits.
