THE RACE FOR THE PERFECT ROMANTIC PROPOSAL

“The plan is pretty simple,” He told the waiter, “When she comes back to the table from the ladies room, bring a bottle of champagne with two glasses, fill the two glasses, then the hard part; you distract her so that I can put the diamond ring in her glass. Then bravo! You apologize and take your leave while I propose a toast where she will see the ring while sipping her glass of champagne. Hmmm! You might say “A pretty smart and very romantic proposing idea”. Things would have gone perfectly as planned if not that she was too thirsty and threw her whole glass of champagne down her throat too fast to even catch a glance of what’s in the cup. She swallowed the million dollar diamond ring, totally ruining the romance, the evening and even the chance of getting engaged on that perfect date.

I saw that on an episode of “Two and a half men”. But I have personally been caught in this whole proposing game twice during my undergraduate days in Covenant University where I was dared to show how I will propose to that special somebody ;), that girl of my dream. I rocked it on those two occasions, feeling like one super romantic lover boy, thanks to my poetic acumen and my knee which was fast to hit the ground :D. I even made a jest of a friend who freaked out and proposed while standing upright staring at his toes, too scared to even look into her eyes. Lol! Like that matters!

An ingenious proposal does not guarantee a successful marriage, If you like write it on the moon or make a television jingle that will run on all TV channel at the same time interrupting normal broadcast, or better still erect a monument for it, that does not mean the family life and marriage crisis will pity or consider your proposing wittiness. If you are not prepared for the marriage life, marriage will make a fool of you, if you like to know even King Solomon’s unwritten love songs.

The universal secret of success is preparation, be it in academics, sport, marriage and even raising kids. This is the point where I bring in the Book of books.

“Through skillful and godly wisdom is a house (a life, a home, a family) built and by understanding it is established [on a sound and good foundation]. And by knowledge shall its chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. Prov 24:3-4

It takes wisdom; a good sense of making a judgment, wise decisions, accumulated learning, going by the dictionary. That is, the ability and drive of applying knowledge, experience and common sense to build a successful venture, marriage inclusive.

Am I like a marriage counsellor or something? Naah! But I am a life coach, one of those tired of the alarming rate of divorce, broken homes, and the weight of single parenthood. Our generation should not add to this disheartening statistics; one out of every two marriages for every first marriage ends in divorce.

Rather than the whole trouble of a perfect proposal. The choice five-star restaurant or spot and the million dollar diamond ring. Invest in the future, in getting set for the real deal, the life that begins after the “I Dos”. A wedding is just a day my friend. I hope you won’t be totally shocked when you wake up the next morning to a life you are totally unprepared for. It might just be too late.

I hope you join me in this campaign to GET IT RIGHT from the very first time.
