You’ll be surprised to know the situation that led to the bride throwing her bouquet, a tradition we have given our own interpretation to without asking where it came from.
Single ladies always look forward to the time during the reception where they will all compete for the Bride’s bouquet. It is generally believed that whoever catches the bouquet will be the next to be married. Sweet right? 😀 Wait till you hear how the custom originated.
In Medieval Europe, so much importance is given to the bride’s dress as it’s seen as a good luck or fertility charm, so every single lady at the wedding always want to have a piece out of the dress, causing them to chase after the bride, ripping her graceful gown reducing it to tatters.
You and I both know how much go into bridal gowns these days, how much she puts into to find the perfect one, not to talk of the cost. Most brides want to keep their wedding dresses as either a memorial or for their daughter to wear for her own wedding, so the custom of chasing and tearing had to go, or better still, be replaced.
So, over the years, the bride throws her bouquet, picks the race after, so before all the single ladies are done fighting for the bouquet, which also symbolises fertility, her treasured wedding dress would have been gotten to safety.
Thus, the “tossing of the bouquet”, interesting right? 😀

Happy married life to all couples that were joined today.
