WEDDING TRADITION: WHY THE BRIDESMAIDS AND GROOMSMEN

Wedding Party of Princess Margaret of ConnaughtApart from the ceremonial and courtesy roles of the bridesmaids and the groomsmen, the reason for having them at wedding ceremonies during the time of the ancient Rome was quite enormous, one you could tag as life-threatening/saving. Maybe you never knew, but bridesmaids and groomsmen were required to dress exactly the same way as the bride and the groom to serve that purpose.
Unlike today where evil and superstitions are less believed. Wedding ceremonies were important and sacred events, one which determines the fate of the new family. Beyond that, it is seen as two broad families (that of the bride and the groom) coming to become one big family. This might be to seal a business deal by bringing the two families together. An initiation into a royal lineage, and many other reasons that are unimaginable today. This brings about the rise of enemies, thus the role of the bridesmaids and groomsmen.
They were required to dress exactly like the couples in other to confuse the evil spirits from being able to identify the bride and the groom to target them for evil, mostly the bride though.
The groomsmen were also known to accompany the bride to the ceremony in order to protect her from thieves who might steal her dowry…lol 😀
And weirdest of all, the Nineteenth-century couples take the bridesmaids along for their intimate honeymoon, still in the name of evil spirits.
As the concerns about evil spirit reduced, bridesmaids and groomsmen are not required to dress exactly like the couples anymore. Now their role is more of providing support and companionship for them, and also in planning bachelorette and bachelor parties. Ushering guest at the occasion, and serving as witnesses at the wedding.

Let the comments roll in. 😉

Happy married life to all couples being joined today.
