Overcoming The Fear Of Witches, Wizards and The Village People

Amen?! Today, we’d be talking about witches and wizards and demons and all their relatives in the villages, cities, water and blah blah. I know that some people would be scared already just by reading the topic. It’s okay… we you know yourselves.

I used to be so scared of these guys. And who wouldn’t be? I mean, if you grew up in the part of the world where I grew up, then you most likely would be scared of them too. There is so much awareness around witches and wizards and the consciousness can just overwhelm you even without your permission. From the assembly… We’d sing songs like, “satan don fall for gutter march am march am..”, getting to the classroom again when it’s lunchtime, we’d go, “…Bless this food oh God for Christ’s sake, Amen. Jesus come and eat, (all your family members and friends) come and eat… satan go awayyyyy!”

When it gets to that satan part, some of us would stand up and shout it. But then if you have watched some of the Nigerian movies I had watched, you’d respect yourself and reduce your voice before Satan comes for you. Lol!

And sadly, that was the kind of environment I grew up in. I then attended some ‘deliverance’ meetings that worsened my condition. When I come out of such meetings, I would have lost my voice, sometimes with body pains from jumping and fighting the devil and yet at the very center of my heart was fear for my village people.

Then God began to teach me on this subject. The light of God’s Words started flooding my eyes of this matter and I started to understand something that changed my perspective forever. I pray that this article helps debunk and cast down those false imaginations that exalt themselves against the knowledge and power of God. Amen

So this would be a mini-bible study so please follow closely and if you can, check out the scriptures too as we go.

  • Firstly, as believers…. our stance against the devil is from a victory standpoint.

When Jesus rose from the dead, he didn’t just forgive us and give us eternal life, He also caused us to be seated with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6).

When many of us read that verse, we just breeze past. Do you know where heavenly places is? It is far above principalities and powers (including the village people and all the demons). That is forever our stance – ABOVE.

I just love Colossians 2. It makes me want to run around jumping when I see how Jesus won the victory for us.
Colossians 2:11-15 (message): “….When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive—right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s cross. He stripped all the spiritual tyrants in the universe of their sham authority at the Cross and marched them naked through the streets…” (note the past tense)

See that?! Devil and his cohorts were dealt for once and for all… we are on top always!

The thing however is most people don’t know this. Ignorance is one major reason why many believers still fall prey to the devil. I am not talking about a head knowledge alone.. or I-read-it-somewhere k knowledge. I am talking about when the revelation of who you are in Christ hits you… the scales would fall off your eyes and when you walk in this knowledge, you have no other choice than to walk in victory.

  • Secondly, fear. Fear opens up the believer to attacks from the devil.

The bible says in 1 Tim 1:7, that God hasn’t given us the spirit of fear. Anything that is of/from fear is not of God. Many times, we do seemingly righteous acts but in fear. I would never forget one of such times when I was in a meeting where we were to be fighting against Satan and his people. The fear in my heart was such that I had my eyes closed all the time (nothing must fly into my life)… to the extent that when I finally opened my eyes after everything, only me was at one corner facing the opposite direction to the altar. Imagine that and even after that the fear in my heart heightened.

Take it as your responsibility of keep faith in God.  Faith comes by hearing and hearing God’s words. Fear is anti-faith. Don’t expect your faith to grow when you continually dwell on stories, movies and all those things that magnify witches and demonic forces. A lot of bad dreams people complain about is from the movie scenes they have watched and not their village.

Therefore eliminate every form of fear and every window that opens up your heart to it. Those movies, conversations, songs, thoughts and all the rest that makes you doubt your reality as a child of God should be eliminated. Give no room at all to them. Because what you see determines what you think.

If you continually watch/hear evil, evil finds its way into your heart, with or without your permission. Click To Tweet

I would also stress a little on this – Watch the kind of prayers you say and the meetings you attend. When you leave a church meeting, you ought to leave better, like bounce out of the church confident of who you are in Christ and be like.. “wey devil?!

It is an error for you to leave a church service and be so scared that you can’t sleep until you open up psalm 91 under your pillow. The time you should spend feeding your mind with the reality of God’s words and praying… shouldn’t be spent studying on Satan and fighting him. We don’t wrestle against flesh and blood so when you keep seeking for your village people or some other witches to die, that isn’t God’s way. God’s way seeks not the death of a man.

The time you should spend feeding your mind with the reality of God's words and praying... shouldn't be spent studying on Satan and fighting him. We don't wrestle against flesh and blood. We have perpetual victory. Click To Tweet

And come to think of it, after all these years of praying for these enemies to die, how come they haven’t all died? Well, because they ain’t going any where. You can’t get rid of the devil. You can’t kill him before his time. If that witch you have in mind dies, her junior ones would take over… so now you see it is futile trying to fight them.

What then do we do? We do what the bible says.. we resist the devil and he would flee (James 4:7). Devil is not going to ever leave you alone forever. He won’t give up…  Satan didn’t stop until Jesus breathed his last (he was doing us a favour though he didn’t know). He also wouldn’t stop so long as you are on the earth. Knowing this, we are not ignorant of his devices. We don’t underrate the devil or act like they don’t exist. We know they exist but we aren’t scared of them because in Christ lies our victory.

And how do you resist the devil? With the word of God. When he comes to fill you with fear and attacks you, you speak the word of God. That does two things. It strengthens you to stand more. It causes the devil to flee because you are resisting him. We also pray – not prayers of fighting the devil but prayers for revelation and knowledge of who you are in Christ. The more you know in the Word of God, the more you are able to resist the devil.
